A 3CCT light lets the installer or user select one of three white-light color temperatures\u2014commonly warm, neutral and cool settings\u2014using a switch or control provided by the manufacturer. The exact values vary, so 3CCT does not automatically mean 3000 K, 4000 K and 5000 K. The selection changes appearance, not necessarily brightness or color rendering, and should normally be made with power isolated if the instructions require it.<\/strong><\/p>

Correlated color temperature, expressed in kelvin, describes whether nominal white light appears warmer\/yellower or cooler\/bluer relative to a reference. It does not measure fixture temperature, energy use or color accuracy. Two products with the same CCT can render objects differently because their spectra and color-rendering properties differ. Use CCT as one design dimension alongside illuminance, glare, CRI or other color metrics, distribution, dimming and finish.<\/p>

How three-position selection works<\/h2>

Many products have a small switch on the driver, junction box or luminaire that routes the LED system to one of three calibrated white settings. Others use wall controls or commissioning software. The switch may be factory-set. Follow the exact sequence; changing an internal selector while energized can be prohibited and unsafe. Some controls remember a setting, while rapid wall-switch cycling can select modes on consumer lamps. These are not interchangeable mechanisms.<\/p>

Warm settings can support hospitality and residential ambience, neutral settings often suit general work, and cooler settings may be chosen for visually crisp utility spaces. Those are tendencies, not rules. Consider materials, daylight, adjacent luminaires, operating time, user preference and task. Mock up the actual room because walls and finishes alter perception. Avoid mixing settings accidentally across a grid unless the design intentionally creates zones.<\/p>

What 3CCT does not guarantee<\/h2>

It does not guarantee high color rendering, low flicker, equal lumens at every setting, dimmer compatibility or tunable-white operation. A selectable product usually stays at one of three discrete values after commissioning; tunable white can vary over a range during use. Check the datasheet for output, power and efficacy at each selection. Verify color consistency between production batches if the space is sensitive.<\/p>

Record the intended setting on drawings and schedules. With power isolated according to instructions, set every fixture before closing ceilings or mounting where the switch becomes inaccessible. Restore power and visually inspect the whole zone, then measure and document where the project requires it. Test dimming at all chosen settings. If one fixture differs, confirm switch position and model before assuming an LED defect.<\/p>

Procurement questions<\/h2>

Ask for the three exact kelvin values, tolerance, color rendering data, spectral or TM-30 information where important, lumen and watt variation, dimming compatibility, switch location, default state and warranty implications. Confirm emergency-driver behavior and replacement availability. For a large project, approve a sample and lock the model and setting. The flexibility is valuable when decisions are late, but it should not replace a coordinated lighting specification.<\/p>
